Subject: Fandub Meeting: Suggestions
[quick quote] [quote]

So tonight we took a gamble and attempted to try our hands at fandubbing once again. We've talked about it on and off over the past few years but never tried it until now. There were some fun moments like Kneekey's DMC and Stardriver but unfortunately it didn't go as planned. Clearly there were many things that we could do better if we ever want to try it again. Here are some of the suggestions I've heard:

  • Microphones - Sorry. This was my fault. I'll bring some next time.
  • More ad lib - Most people defaulted to reading the subs which is okay but more spontaneity would be fun.
  • Make it like Karaoke Night - Have people bring in shows they want to do instead of picking for them.
  • People are too shy - Can't be helped. It's funny how loud some of our members are and yet many can't do anything when standing in front of a crowd.

I can't remember anymore suggestions I heard tonight. If you have any please share them with us so that we can make the club activities better.

I think the emphasis should really be on high-energy kinetic scenes. Shouting and enthusiasm get the audience onboard, and action scenes are just more fun to watch at a clip anyway.

What would be nice would be a defined list of characters for each scene with the scripts (as they already appear) written out so people have a reference to go by.

Part of the issue was projection.  People were turned toward the TV reading the subs, and that made it difficult to hear since they were facing away from us.  Microphones would alleviate this a fair bit, but it still feels like the speakers should be facing their audience.

This could be accomplished but having the cast at the opposite end of the room from the TV.  If they have scripts in hand they can use the video for visual queues without needing to be near enough to read the subtitles.

Perhaps another thing that can be done is let people review their clip before getting up to perform it.  This way the timing and lines don't come as a surprise and it gives them a change to ad-lib more.  If the performers get together as a group they can brainstorm together, scratch existing lines from their scripts, and alter as they see fit.

This would also lend itself more to group participation since if people are huddled in their groups rewriting the scene they can't as easily slip into multiple roles.  That way the same small group can't get up repeatedly and others will be more likely drawn in.

So, have a set selection of clips.  Have the scripts for those clips.  Perhaps have set group leaders who have the clips on their laptops ready to cluster up for the practice/rewrites.  Perform over the group instead of with backs to the group.

it's already been said, but i'll toss in my two cents:

mics would probably solve most of the problems.
in the back of the room, it was hard to hear some of the dubbing over the actual anime-dubs--let's face it: some caine members are shy and speak quietly in front of groups because they are nervous. mics would allow everyone to be heard over the anime itself.
....or i suppose you could go about it another way and just mute the clip itself, although i think the sound effects and music of the anime add a nice touch to dubbing, so i guess mics would be more efficient...
