I have to wonder if we're getting a new crew member when this arc is over with. Could be Jinbei, who's simply awesome, or it could be shirahoshi, whose ability to manipulate sea kings is something else. FUCK YEAH SEAKINGS.

I think that, for a good, long while, the Strawhats won't be getting a new member. Especially after chapter 580, I can say this with a fair amount of certainty (watch, I'll probably end up eating my own words). The chemistry between the Strawhats is perfect, as far as I'm concerned, and I can't imagine that the addition of a new crew member--least of all, Jinbei--would improve anything. I mean, it's already kinda amazing that Oda can manage the other eight Strawhat crew members in the ways he does.

However, there was one person who was consistently with Luffy when he was at his lowest: Jimbei. Jimbei was with Luffy from Impel Down to right before the time skip. There can't be anyone the crew could meet in the New World that could have a good enough dynamic. Plus, Luffy said he wanted 10 crew members, and there are currently nine members in the Strawhat Pirates. Jimbei is now a full-blown pirate and could help the rookie crew. JIMBEI FOR STRAWHAT!

Well, the most obvious arguments that stick out in my head is that Vivi tagged along with the crew for a significant amount of time, but she didn't become an established member of the crew except that she did in all our hearts... but NO MATTER! Aside from Vivi's situation, Brooke became a crew member within two pages of his introduction, so, in some respects, it's not like there's any rhyme or reason to what Eiichiro Oda decides to draw. And I don't particularly care that Jinbei has has a specialized skillset that would be super cool and awesome or whatever to see in battle. More than his battle ability, I worry about his interaction with the rest of the crew in terms of personality. Like, how would Jinbei and Usopp interact? Jinbei and Brooke? Like, howwwwww? How would that even go down? That's what I can't imagine. Look, maybe Jinbei will join the crew, and maybe he won't. I wouldn't particularly mind either way. I have complete and total faith in Eiichiro Oda that he will stay true to what he's been doing these past fourteen years. But I only get more and more disinterested by conversation focused on trying to predict what he's going to draw next. And this is, of course, my personal preference for certain elements of story-telling over others. Not to be sexist or anything, but I'm pretty sure the reason I can't get into this whole discussion about whether or not Jinbei will join the crew is because it's a guy thing. I've found that it's usually guys who try to predict plot points, which is something I find pretty interesting. Of course there are exceptions, but I feel like girls are more pre-disposed to talking about their personal, emotional reaction to a story than guys are. Or, at least, the points of interest in the emotional reactions for guys and girls tend to understandably differ.

I'd think that Jimbei's argument for inclusion is stronger than Vivi's, if only because Jimbei is in a named conflict ( STRAW HAT VS. ENEMY) and I'm pretty sure only crew members get to do that. It was the death knell for Paulie-for-mugiwara fans when Franky started his battle against Fukurou. And regarding character interactions, I think it's important to understand that Jimbei is: A) fiercely loyal and adhering to his personal honor code, resembling that of an oldschool yakuza, B) a fishman with all of the cultural and personality aspects thereof, and C) a pirate of the old school who likely personally knows most or all of the seven seas, four stars, and important Navy officers. In a scenario where Jimbei joins, (A) is why Jimbei relents to Luffy's request/demand, because of the promise he made Ace and for Luffy's vow of protection, (B) is some interesting character/knowledge that he brings to the table, and (C) can create very important introductions to or at least exposition of major power players. And with that.... HOW DARE YOU USE ME AND YONATHAN AS LEGITIMITE EVIDENCE IN AN OBSERVATION OF MALE BEHAVIORS! THAT'S SEXIST! But for serious, not only does your claim of "guy thing" make sense to me at an individual level, I've seen enough forum discussions about television / manga / videogame plot points that support your claim rather than refute it. I mean, honestly, very few activities are more gratifying to a guy than being right about something all along.
