Built an open-walled building to serve as a spawn area.  At some point I'll move the server's spawn point there, and then there will be no more issues with opening/going through doors in the base.

Also made some improvements to the minecart system (the ground-level one at least) on the server:

  • Built a station effectively connecting the Gold and Silver lines, so one can now go all the way from the base to Unlimited Arrow Works without leaving a minecart. (as requested at game night)
  • Looped all rail endpoints so you can just whack a button to get going again. (if for some reason you didn't actually want to go to that endpoint)
  • Hid all redstone torches powering the powered rails by placing them below the powered rails.
  • Still haven't worked out a design for the two three-way junction stations we need.

    Also seriously considering moving over to Bukkit, so I can run a few choice mods.  WorldEdit definitely, and I'll have to explore the options for controlling explosions/fire/weather.  Ultimate goal is to be able to turn monsters on again.

    Totally playing the official 1.8 leak/prerelease.

    The two items you see in my inventory that you won't recognize from previous versions are Raw Chicken (from a chicken (derp)), and Rotten Flesh (from a zombie in a cave behind where I chose to make my home).

    Passive animals totally run away from you now when you hit them, rather than staring at you and waiting for more.  Me like.

    You regenerate health, and food items replenish your hunger meter.  The more well-fed you are, the faster you'll heal.  I experienced this in the fight with the aforementioned zombie, which I beat down with a block of wood.

    Cooking the Raw Chicken, predictably, turned it into Cooked Chicken.  I have no clue how much it replenishes the hunger meter, which I'm purposefully letting deplete a bit.  The Rotten Flesh doesn't seem to be cookable, so maybe it's for crafting or the hunger meter (perhaps not-so-advisable use?).

    Also, I am totally enjoying the new dynamic lighting.  Note the orange-ish glow on the left, from a torch, and the blue glow on the right, from the night sky.

    Also, this screenshot is from the "cave behind my house", which appears to merely be a small tunnel connected to one of the new ravines.

    Also Also, I spawned on grass, not sand.  I think.

    Endermen appear to be killed by sunlight.  I was out exploring after the first night and found some Ender Pearls lying on the ground, and a tree with a few missing blocks.

    Found an Enderman.  Apparently when it rains during the day (even when it's not a thunderstorm) it's dark enough for stuff to spawn.  They also make zombie noises, I don't know if this is just because of the pre-release nature of the update, or what.  Killing one netted me an Ender Pearl (seems to be a guaranteed drop), and a load of experience (almost an entire bar's worth).

    Hopefully they won't move player-placed blocks...

    There's now an animation (and a door-opening noise) on opening a chest, and the lock is now a 3D object that sticks out from the side of the chest.

    Chests also no longer display the block breaking animation.

    Tamed (four torches around the spawner) and looted the dungeon.  Loot across the bottom row of my inventory.  Seems like a good haul.  Gonna go make a bow and fishing rod now.  Yay!

    On my way back, I think I critted a skeleton.  I saw a little sparkle or something and it took two hits (plus flame from daylight) with a stone sword to beat it.  I think the daylight had hit it twice.

    Cookies now stack past 8, by the way.  I have 16 of them, all in one slot.

    It took a while, but I have at least one of all the food items except Mushroom Soup and Apple/Golden Apple now.  (also missing is the rare stuff that 1.8 adds)

    From left to right:
    First row: Raw Porkchop, Cooked Porkchop, Raw Beef, Steak, Raw Chicken, Cooked Chicken, Raw Fish, Cooked Fish, Cookie
    Second row: Bread, Rotten Flesh

    Rotten Flesh replenishes some of your hunger bar, but poisons you.  I used it to return to a well-fed state and noticed my health going up, rather than down.

    I haven't tested the strengths of all of them, but here's what I've got so far:
    Raw Fish restores one hunger.
    Bread and Cooked Fish restore two hunger.
    Cooked Chicken restores three hunger.
    Steak restores four hunger.

    As you can see from the stack of bread on my hotbar, food now stacks to 64.

    I'm playing 1.8 now, too, and I'm liking it.

    That being said, however, Cave Spiders SUCK, especially when there's a bunch of them near a lava pool. I freakin' DIED...

    But abandoned mine shafts are fun, with their random monster spawners and the cobwebs and the wooden supports EVERYWHERE. Then there are the sudden vertical drops. Minecraft needed these elements from the start, good thing we're getting them now.

    Not really a lot built yet.  I made a "safe" building, but haven't moved the spawn point inside it yet...

    All that really exists is that building, the mine I started (stairway goes downwards to a cave with an abandoned mine shaft), and an area I cleared out for building a farm and leading animals to so we can have a steady supply of food.  Having to breed animals is going to be a bitch, especially since I can only find sheep around the spawn point.

    And if for whatever reason you don't want to join, but want to explore what's available, enter the seed CAINE in singleplayer.  I almost made it an island seed I found recently...
