It's got darker themes than your standard mahou shoujo, and acid-trip inspired dungeon-crawling scenes. But it doesn't do enough differently to change your mind about mahou shoujo if you've got beef with the genre in general.

Watch Nanoha the Movie if you want to change your mind about mahou shoujo. That's where the good combat is.

I'd say that Madoka will end up doing more than most people suspect at first glance since the entire series is designed as a deconstruction of the magical girl genre. When you put all the clues together you'll realize all the neat possibilities for the ending.
