Subject: CAINE Showings 2011 - 2012
[quick quote] [quote]

For showings this year, I want input from the club before making a final cut, so for the next few weeks I will leave the following form open for members to make submissions:

Submit Response

Once I have enough submissions or June 10th passes by, whichever comes first, I will post the consolidated list of candidates here for more feedback.

Addendum: Admins and Mods, I have locked this thread so that I might get individual feedback and look for trends.  If a significant portion of the club all submits one particular series, that will weigh in with my decisions, but if people just post to a thread that element will be lost.  I will unlock this thread eventually to open the floor for discussion and defense.

My number one pick is NHK ni Youkoso as a serious business show.

Here's some others in no particular order:
  • Ga-rei Zero
  • Seto no Hanayome
  • Gankutsuou
  • Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
  • Last Exile
  • Natsume Yuujinchou

Will add more or defend things later.

I'm currently working my way through the list.  I should have something up here after the middle of July, and open the floor then.

I'd say Madoka would be awesome, except most people have probably already seen it.

    Trigun, mmmm....
    Futurama FTW!

    I'll vouch for Dennou Coil.

Denno Coil is a really neat near-future scifi about kids with Augmented Reality glasses that project an internet over their world. They form a club that solves the mysteries in their little town including lost pets, viruses, and beards that form their own civilization and launch nuclear weapons at each other's faces. Overally, Dennou Coil is a really fun anime to watch with lots of enjoyable characters.

Of the list, these are the other ones I'd be interested in seeing:

Natsume Yuujinchou (+Zoku) - I love this for the atmosphere and all the neat little spirits that Natsume meets.

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - Just finished this one too. Beautifully animated and it really does a good job of establishing the feeling of nostalgia. Since it's an 11 episode series, pairing it up with something like Angel Beats or Madoka would be great.

Madoka - I'd love to go back through this series after the rollercoaster, avoiding-all-the-spoilers ride we had when it was airing.

My suggestion is to avoid very recent series because there is a good chance people have already seen it/just watched it. Rewatching is fine and all but I know plenty of people skip showings to avoid wasting time. In the same vain try to pick at least a couple of low-key series to give many members something "new" to look forward to that they would not normally watch on their own. Basically the idea behind both of these suggestions is to give people a reason to come to showings without feeling like they are wasting their time.

Will voice thoughts on particular series later.

Also Mr. Universe, change your avatar. We all changed ours back to normal a couple of months ago.

I pretty much agree with Honya's sentiment.  The other thing I would add is that it might be a good idea to have something Western again for the fall, like we did last year.

I haven't read through the list yet but the most important thing to me is to have a balance of show types. So if we pick an action show for slot 1, slot 2 should be a drama or something without fighting.

I still think Western shows don't work well for full slots due to their format and our club ratio of people who prefer anime vs Western. A Western special themed showing might be a good idea though. We could show a bunch of movies.

Because that worked so well last time. I liked Spider-Man as much as the next guy, but the fall semester showings drew our worst attendance figures since Honya and I created the current showings format.

From the list, I would LOVE to see Abenobashi or Asura Cryin' as a part of our regular showings. I'm also going to endorse Kimi ga Nozomu Eien for its potential to generate both tears and white-hot rage.

Also, for the love of Haruhi let's not show Seto no Hanayome. My body can't take it.

This might be a bit late, but doing some research for some ideas, anyways, I concur to previous post about showing non-mainstream shows.

I think we should keep the ACTION/COMEDY/DRAMMA format

    Kare Kano (dramma, 26ep)
    Genshiken (comedy, 13ep)
Sketch, (comedy, 12ep) like this slot can be filled with most other paraody/slice of life comedy, just avoid anything too extreme or fanservicy.  also, I feel like comedy shows can be a bit mainstream since I certainly don't mind watching azumanga dioh or one of the minami-kei again.
Higashi no Eden (action, sci-fi, 11ep)
maybe macross frontier(25ep), darker than black(25ep)?

I havn't watched any of these, basing them off of reviews and ratings.

We've shown Genshiken in the past (it's one of our club's unofficial favorite series) and Darker Than Black as well (though that was when Andre was still president). If by Sketch you mean Hidamari Sketch, that show has limited appeal to anyone besides moefags, so I'm against it. And I tried for years to sneak Macross Frontier into showings, but by now I think I've bullied most of the club into watching it on their own time.

Higashi no Eden might have merit, though.

Here are my thoughts on everything but the only things I would push hard for are in bold.

    Spoiler:

Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai - Watched the first episode like 8 years ago and it was fairly entertaining. Can't say more than that though since I can barely remember anything.
Angel Beats - Loved the show but I think it's bordering on the everyone has watched it category. Not a bad choice at all but I think it would be better to give a slot to something else.
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - Too recent
Asura Cryin - It's entertaining though a bit convoluted. My biggest concern is whether or not people will get through the first series which is mostly just what the hell is going on. Asura Cryin 2 is stronger overall and brings most of the things introduced in the original together.
Azumanga Daioh - Great laughs and it's been a while since it's been shown in full in the club. A safe bet.
Darker Than Black - Technically we did watch this 4 years ago but never to completion so you could try it again this year. No real strong feelings either way though.
Dennou Coil - Never watched it but L loved it and really how many things does he actually like? I'll let him explain.
    DuRaRaRa!! - Never watched
    eX-Driver - Never watched
Futurama - Although I'm a huge fan of the show I don't think there is a point to showing this since it's easily available to watch on Comedy Central.
Ga-rei Zero - Beautiful action and drama show. Would recommend just for the first couple of episodes themselves but everything afterwards is just as intense.
Gankutsuou - A sci-fi twist on the Count of Monte Cristo. Very, very strong thriller drama.
Genshiken - Watched this 4 years ago though we never finished Genshiken 2 (Sorry about that). Could possibly watch. My only concern is how hard it would be for newcomers to anime to understand jokes and references in the first one since even I had trouble with that.
Ghost Stories - I don't think my body can handle seeing multiple episodes at a time.
    Grenadier - Never watched
    Hanasaku Iroha - Too recent.
Hidamari Sketch - I personally enjoy this but like miki_sei said, I doubt there will be enough overall appeal for most people so I vote no.
Higashi no Eden - Never watched
    Kare Kano - Never watched
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien - Fantastic romantic drama series with high chances of tears and rage. Would be great for the club as it would generate a lot of discussion amongst members and occasional "no yous." At least for me that's why I prefer us as a club to watch entire series versus sampling a ton of shows like most other anime clubs. Also if this is shown you MUST show the OVA afterwards to give the other side justice and create more rage between the two factions which will develop.
Last Exile - Very good adventure series. It's not the type of show we normally show so it'd be an interesting way to shake things up.
Macross Frontier - Exciting dogfights, catchy music and triangles. Would fit nicely in the action slot.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - Too recent
Michiko to Hatchin - Never watched
Minami-ke - Watched it Spring 2010 and it would be strange to show the sequels since they come literally a few days after the original finale so I vote no.
Moyashimon - Pretty fun dicking around and interesting characters so possibly. I only suggest you don't show it at the beginning or end when people maybe eating or getting ready to eat.
Natsume Yuujinchou/Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou - Strong series in its own regard but I think this has great appeal especially for female fans.
Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu - Liked it overall but the only really strong parts are the beginning, ending and a few middle episodes. The sequel...Let me put it this way. I don't even remember what happened. If you decide to use this, only show the first series and let people watch the second on their own time.
Seto no Hanayome - High energy laughs. May possibly be too overstimulating.
Shinryaku! Ika Musume - Too recent
    Solty Rei - Never watched
Spaceballs: The Animated Series - Never watched
    Speed Grapher - Never watched
    Trigun - Never watched
    Vandread - Never watched
Welcome the NHK! - This is THE show when it comes to NEETs and hikikomoris. It starts off mostly comedic exploring the stranger sides of otaku fandom but gets progressively darker as it delves deeper into the darker aspects. Would be a great fit for the club.

tl;dr Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and NHK are my top 2 picks.

@Strategos Folken, could you make the arguments I made publicly available? Those were a lot more detailed then the stuff I just posted.

My top two pics are probably Welcome to the NHK and Dennou Coil, although there are plenty of other shows in that list that would be great to show as well (just not some of the most recent ones).

Higashi no Eden is probably not a show for everyone.  Despite that, it is definitely unique and at times is great.  Also, if we did plan on showing it, we would need to show the two movies that follow the series, as the series itself doesn't really have an ending (they had planned to end the series with two movies).

I guess it's no secret to anyone that I've been trying to get Azumanga Daioh shown for a while now (Since the Andre era at least).  I don't ever remember CAINE showing it.  If we did show it, it was before I started going to showings, which was a long time ago.

Also, another issue is obtaining the stuff.  Every series I suggested I can provide in one form or another.  I certainly hope that's the case with others, especially the older ones that it'd be difficult to find torrents and/or retail DVDs of.

Two picks: Azumanga Daioh and Trigun.
