Subject: More Money for CAINE
[quick quote] [quote]

hi guys

so tomorrow is the deadline for end of semester expenses for CAINE.  I am thinking about submitting a budget to increase CAINE's library collection.  I will approximate a budget tomorrow, but I don't know much about mangas so I need suggestions.

if you have any series you want to read, put its name here, and if you can, put a sentence on how it is educational or cultural enrichment.  you don't have to, or just make up some BS.  the hearing for the budget is still couple weeks from now.  no porn request please XD

also, who is planning to go to mangakat or mangacon or w/e that thing is.  How is it beneficial in addition to video games?  I can probably convince them to sponser a couple people if a can think of a good reason.

Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue
You could make an argument about how this manga promotes cultural enrichment in that it loosely recounts the life of Miyamoto Musashi, a well-known figure in Japanese history. But aside from its historical significance, this manga could be better described as a lesson in philosophy. Vagabond is a substantial piece of art and literature, and it has been recognized for several awards.
Nine omnibus volumes (and, alternatively, 33 single volumes) have been released in English.

Real by Takehiko Inoue
Another great work from Takehiko Inoue. Real deals with the nature of and the circumstances surrounding physical disabilities. This manga expertly depicts how serious physical ailments such as paralysis can take ahold of the lives of those directly affected and their loved ones.
Nine volumes released in English.

Hourou Musuko (Wandering Son) by Shimura Takako
This manga delicately explores issues such as transsexualism and gender identity in children and teenagers. (...That's probably enough, right?)
One volume released in English.

Solanin by Inio Asano
Solanin tells the story of a group of twenty-somethings as they question the worth of their idle lives years after college.
One (thick) volume released in English. Complete.

Mushishi by Urushibara Yuki
Japanese folk tales and mythology and supernatural stuffs.
Seven single volumes and one omnibus volume (volumes 8, 9, 10) released in English. Complete.

I got lazy about half-way through. Let me know if you want me to elaborate at all.

I take it the library actually gets more love now? Basically at some point I questioned the use in expanding the collection since it got used only a few times a year. Just wondering how much that has changed now since it should be more accessible I'm guessing and hopefully more fully utilized.

As for going more back on topic, how about Genshiken...since I took it with me >_>. It's about The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture AKA it's all about otaku subculture. I don't feel like writing more since most people can vouch for me.

(Don't have anymore suggestions since I don't read much and I don't actually know/care what's released in the US)

Also moving this to News since it is a major announcement. (Oh crap so this how I use post #3333)

I own the first 9 VizBig volumes of Vagabond and the first 8 volumes of Real.  I'd lend them out to the CAINE library, but I dunno if anyone read the things I put on loan two years ago, and I dunno when I'd be able to pick them up.

EDIT: Alex, apparently Vagabond VizBig 10 came out this past summer and Real 10 comes out in about three weeks.  I think I have an Amazon order to fill out....

In another thread, I suggested the Batwoman: Elegy collection. I resubmit that request here.

>>27766 for my reasons why.

Also, do we have the Azumanga Daioh Omnibus in the club collection? If not, we need that too. Few series can match Azumanga's ability to appeal to both new and veteran manga readers, making it a great ambassador title for us.

The budget for the extension of the library has been approved!

We will probably have enough to get all the series listed here plus we are thinking of filling in the gaps of existing series in the library.  Keep posting ideas, the more things we want, the more money we can get :)

I will post an update once we get the final amount and ordered the material.  Gradon is doing his best to get the library organized and have it cataloged so we can have members check out stuff during meetings.

Note* I cancelled the magfest budget for it is in Jan and the school funds only go up to spending before Dec 6.

All of you living in NoVA, my local comics shop, Phoenix Comics, is offering 40% off any one item in the store if you're on their mailing list.  On top of that, for the whole weekend everything on the store except for figurines is going to be 30% off, and back issues of comic books are all 40% off.

Alright, the library goods are ordered. We made a few adjustments to fit the allocated budget.  Sorry about the previous comment about how we can probably afford everything listed here, as I was ignorant of the series length and the price of anime/manga.

Neon Genesis Evangelion DVD Platinum Collection

Yotsuba&! Volumes 1-10

Solanin

Batwoman: Elegy

Gankutsuou Volume 3

Azumanga Daioh Omibus

Batman: Year One

They will be available next week, let us know on Thursday if you are interested to check out one of these.

Thanks to you all for contributing in the forums, I could not have done it with without these.  Keep the ideas flowing, such as other anime conventions, anime/manga, or culture enriching event.

Hey guys, I need more titles for the next hearing, let me know what you want to read / propagate your interest.  And a BS sentence about how cool it is for eh.. enrichment purposes. I just dont want to bore them with the same titles everytime and they dont like you to refer to previous requests or they auto decline.

Copies of the Evangelion Movies for the library, they've lowered in price on Amazon.  DVDs probably better at this point over Blu-Rays, for compatibility.

I know we could use a new copy of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, as the current copy's cover was falling apart back when I first checked it out.

Should probably run through the list and see if any particular series needs to be brought up to date.

I heard Strike Witches get bandied about. Not sure how to describe it for pitching purposes, but it was endorsed by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs - a pretty rare honor for an anime, so far as I can tell.
