I dont really mind thread hijacking...

but Clannad would be my first recommendation. The part about VNs that turns most people away is the H-scenes, because then it gets listed under 'porn' rather than just 'audio+graphical book with awesome story and characters'.

Clannad has no H-scenes, and allows one to appreciate only the better parts when it comes to VNs.

I think Fate/Stay Night is the place to start. There are H-scenes, yes, but they're more of a joke than anything else, and outside of that it's a great story with three very different paths to take. Also is heavier on the MANLY ACTION quotient than the other two.

Also, as less of a VN fan than Zanaikin or Honya, I say that it's worth giving VNs a try if you want to dig deeper into otaku culture, but by no means would I say it's required to play them all the time.

Hmmm, I just remembered, they never did completely finish working on Clannad yet and the interface is still in Japanese...

Ever17 IIRC suffers the one problem of having a more boring early-game since the comedy isn't as well placed as KEY and some other studios do it.

So yeah, it would probably be FSN then, which also has one extra advantage: the 3 'ingame-day' prologue gives a very good piece of the game's style that gets into the action fast. Its one downside is the fact that if you've seen the anime (which most have), you already know the first route, but you have to play thru the first route anyways to unlock the other two routes...with third being the best one...
Good FSN-style visnovs are kind of rare though, so it's not really the best idea of most of the availability out there.

Aoishiro. Recently translated Yuri VN that was originally a PS2 title that was later released in an upgraded PC version. It contains an awful lot of high quality graphics, text, and every line is voiced. It has as much as 56 ends so huge VN is huge.

Damn you exams!!

I finished downloading it but I'm getting my new HD tomorrow so I'll be busy copying files over to it. I'll be busy most of Thursday until after 9pm so I can give it to you late night or Friday.
