Paul:

First full patch of MuvLuv Alternative came out:

http://visual-novels.net/vn/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1157&Itemid=2

although most likely a leak from the translation group, they're likely still in editing... xD

EDIT: yeah, comment says "An unstable Amaterasu patch translating all of Muv Luv Alternative was recently leaked by as of now, ex-member of Amaterasu." but hey, news of almost completion at least :P

any tactical decisions? it looks like it is pretty automated from the gameplay video.  Also umm, character customization and development? that's like the core to RPG with grinding xD

Oh a WHOLE lot... simply cause it's all about picking the right ships for a fleet, picking the right admirals for each battle, and making sure to use the right concentration of force. Just like in real WW2, it's extremely easy for Japan to get overstretched (like when my main fleet / best admirals were in Africa fighting the British while Soviet Union declared war on me and invaded through Siberia).

and screw your grinding fetish =P

the basics goes:
--- ships are divided into 5 major classes (carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, submarines; there are also support ships) with 4 types of weapons (fighter, laser, missile, guns); radar determines initiative of attack within each weapon range, and there are defenses against each type of attack. Larger ships are most costly to build and command; they've got more firepower but also has lower speed/radar. Close-range weapons like guns have higher dmg than lasers/missiles, but only if they survive long enough to get there :P Carriers are extremely powerful due to long range and high firepower, but they're very expensive and very fragile if combat gets close.
--- each admiral has up to 4 ship slots, and each of them has their own bonuses and abilities: for combat, rear-defense, or peacekeeping. They also have command points that limit how heavy ships that can be used. Selecting the right ships and right admirals is half the job.
--- moving across the world maps takes time. Seeing as by midgame you'll be warring America, Britain, and Soviets at the same time, strategic planning and deployment is huge.
--- each battle is separated into up to 4 zones and up to 3 rounds of combat exchanges. You only need to take down enough enemies for victory points to win the battle--- so knowing whom to attack is another part of the job.

Will probably write up a review later xD

battle engine is very simple but very polished...

air strike from Zhukov, with Rommel coming in after him (those two being allies xD)

LoliHitler was surprisingly one of the best characters in the game. Awesome personality + ridiculously good stats + Manstein/Rommel/Donitz as main commanders. Even Himmeler and Goebbels weren't bad xD

SIEG HAIRU ADORUFU!

Senguko Rance

FIN

*may contain spoilers

Well, thank Haruhi for a visual novel without any tear jerking plots.  Rance did start off as totally TSUN, but goes through enough character development that he becomes TSUNDERE, like a embarrassed little boy trying to act tough.  Which makes the game all in all a lot better when you can like the protagonist.   Though story wasn't amazing, the humor lasts all the way though.  Though one downside is that most of the humor roots in Rances' flaw (or blessing) of being a sex addict, so it was mostly dirty jokes instead of wise jokes.  The H-Scenes was totally wacky, in my opinion those are pretty much like the D board, read them for giggles.

The game play is the best so far for strategy+RPG+visual novel combo out there.  Because it infuses troop battle along with character battles, makes the development a little bit more interesting and diverse.

The replay value of this game is really high, although being story driven, it is not linear at all.  Only difference from this to completely free for all game is that you cannot backtrack and do things you missed, only option is to start a new game, or as experienced visual novel players, make lots of game save flags.

I don't think anyone ever plays Alice-games for its plotline. Their strategy-RPG mechanics however are solid, and their character design can be pretty cool at times, which comes off double given the huge cast. If anything, I'd say its character(clear) driven.

The fun battle mechanics and high replay value is the reason why this game is so famous, after all...

Now TSUN Rance I don't see in the main route, much--- it's extremely obvious in Kenshin's route (now that you've beaten the game once thru the core route it opens the three IF heroine routes, see the alicewiki for branching info). Uesugi Kenshin is, strangely enough, one of the few people Rance can actually have a decent relationship with (he's actually a somewhat nice person with her! albeit still a crazed pervert). She's also awesome enough to have her own theme song (MARS) in a game with dozens upon dozens of characters XD

The 'joke' is that this guy is so messed up when it comes to relationships with girls that he's actually weak to pure love.

and if nothing else, alicesoft made their H-scenes easy to skip thru without overskipping, thanks to the repeating '...'  lines at the end of each one.

Anyhow, if you have the time, you should really play try the multi-playthru xD. Here are some things to know:
--- You're pretty much forced to march towards the east (Takeda/Uesugi/Hojo) or conquer towards the west (Mouri/Takuga) during the campaign, so naturally checking out the Mouri/Takuga characters usually requires a second playthru. Imo though, the Mouri gang is nowhere as interesting, although getting Mouri's starting package is pretty good.
--- One-Eyed house is one of the best challenges in the game with a really good reward: the One-Eyed bonus game start package that gives you its 5 charas makes early game a breeze (Date and Omachi are just way too good).
--- Nanjo Ran's route is one-of-a-kind in a strange way (avoiding-spoilers)
--- battle permits are awesome and speed up the game by lot; use them if you haven't.

at first he is like so evil towards Sill, I am like this dude can die.  He is always evil towards guys.... unless they get a sex change LMAO.

I started Ran route, so tired from lack of sleep.  but how you get your overpowered troops?  I started a new game and my generic captians still same old.  only got 2 char clears the first play through, there are none that I like enough to spend time on.  Yeah I beat the game easy enough, but still got a 0 score even though I spent all my affection points on end-game points.

Kenshin is so OP.... there is no way I could beat xavier w/o her.  Lols at riceball, kenshin and yamamoto are the only characters I see that rance actually work for, instead of just rape them.

IIRC, the end-game points satisfaction bonus doesn't work--- it's bugged.

As I keep telling you, check the alicewiki. Now, to get overpowered troops--- the easiest way to do is to get a 100% completion game file (google it), otherwise you have to unlock it all yourself:

Mouri starting package (Motonari + the three sisters) is decent
Takeda starting package (the four generals) is ridiculous simply cause the cavalry
and One-Eyed starting package (the four guardians + Date) is so hax since Omachi is godly powerful and Date is the highest-statted warrior unit ingame

Each starting package requires you to recruit all characters of that group + trigger an event. It's really hard to recruit any of those group to completion... I never managed it for Takeda.

Now, for your list of awesome characters:
--- Uesugi Kenshin + Uruza Planeis (2nd reinforcement from Zeth). Kenshin's Wargoddess Aura takes away 1 flag from all enemy units, and Uruza can learn Precise Shot which also takes 1 flag from all enemy units. Since most units only have 3 flags, the enemy would only be able to move once after that and they'd be out of moves... one-sided killing after that. Also, Uruza does *really* high dmg in dungeon/boss fights; better than Kenshin infact =P
--- Omachi (One-Eyed house) is easily the most OP chara in game. High speed, high magic, a single-turn spell that does 0.5xdmg to all enemies, and a double-turn spell that does 1.5xdmg to all enemies (which usually wipes the map). She's a pain to recruit though.
--- Date Masamune (One-Eyed house) is actually better warrior than Kenshin: mostly 9 stats, 6flags with ridiculously high speed, and his 'eyedrops' ability which recovers his HP to full in boss/dungeon fights.
--- Maria Custard (2nd reinforcement from Leazus) is one of the only two cannon units you can get: ranged, very high ATK, and somewhat ignores defense. She also learns Rapid Fire which delivers a double damage barrage.
--- Reira (3rd reinforcement from Leazus) has royal guard charge, which deals x2 dmg when enemy troop size is larger. I've seen her make 1hitkills against 1k+ and even 2k+ troop units.
--- Natori (Miko institute) is the only good miko commander in game. Her special Snape kills 30% of enemy max troops' value from all enemies.
--- Magic (3rd reinforcement from Zeth) is slow as heck, but learns White Ray of Destruction which is a guard-ignoring magic attack (ignores DEF) that hits the entire row.
--- Yuzuhara Yuzumi (Tanegashima house) has Shoot+Snipe, which is kinda musket volley + assassinate at once; real handy when it works.
--- Sanada Dourin (Takeda house) has an ability that shifts the battle-meter. Extremely useful for castle battles where the meter is so against you.

EDIT: Also, Rance only treats guys decent when he respects their skills. check out Sanada Dourin's route for instance. He's also okay with Hojo Souun, although he likes to be a jerk towards him cause Souun is too straight-laced. If he doesn't respect them, then he's an ass to them and treats them like disposable/annoying objects.
Which, in a ways, you could say he treats girls the same way. After all, he *really* respect Kenshin's skills since she Snape killed him during their first encounter xD

What would you recommend that is relatively short?  I think the only reason I haven't played any visual novel besides Katawa Shoujo all the way through is because of the daunting length of many of them.
